Five Card Stud Rules

Five playing card Stud has been an older poker game that is not popular with the bulk of those playing at present (both at casinos and in internet sites), Seven playing card Stud has taken its place in popularity with a vast quantity of poker players.

This is a very simple game, arguably a good deal too easy to keep players involved.  The single down card holds not much in the way of surprises for the other players, this creates few bluffing chances, and winning hands are easily noticed by others playing and they will quickly lay down their hand.

While Five playing card Stud isn’t that fashionable any longer, the poker game does have a little appeal thus there are a a small number of sites that have it as a poker game selection.

This has been the way you play the poker game Five playing card Stud:

  • Every one of the competitors ante up before the deal (the amount of the ante will be different based on the table restrictions).
  • The dealer gives each person two cards, one face down (the ‘hole’ playing card) and one playing card face up.
  • Wagers are placed, beginning with the player showing the highest valued card.
  • A new card is dealt (face up) to every player.
  • There follows the next round of wagering.
  • A new playing card has been dealt (face up) to each player.
  • Another round of wagering follows, however for this round the least possible wager has been doubled.
  • Every participant is dealt their final card, face up.
  • The last round of betting follows.

Following the final betting round all remaining competitors show their completed hand, with the last player to raise displaying their hands first.  The person displaying the winning poker cards claims the pot.

Wagering Note: Betting in Five Card Stud is different from Texas Hold’em and Omaha poker as it is the best ranking face up hand that decides who wagers first in that round.  The wagering then goes in a clockwise direction around the table, however the first bettor for each round may change as the best hand showing moves around the table.
